Stow 'n go consists of bins in the floor behind the first row of seats, and folding second-row seats that can be folded into those bins, resulting in a flat load floor for easily carrying larger objects. Or, when the seats are up in the normal seating position, the bins can accommodate toys, games, sporting gear, tools or whatever. another popular feature is swivel 'n go seating, with second-row chairs that swivel to the rear and a table that fits between those seats and the third-row bench, thus allowing up to five people to face each other around the table. It's great for keeping the kids entertained on a trip, for getting in a little work, or having an on-road conference. Other available features include a video system with one or two rear screens, wireless headphones, and remote control; a spot to plug in a laptop; power sliding side doors and power liftgate; and the capability to download music to a hard-drive sound system. Or, if need be, all the seats can be folded flat and the grand caravan can accept a sheet of plywood or some bales of hay. the grand caravan's suspension delivers a nice, smooth ride, though it can sometimes wallow. It's more about comfort and safety than carlike precision. Electronic stability control is standard, and the grand caravan has performed well in government crash tests. The handling is a bit cumbersome, not surprising, given the grand caravan's size. It doesn't go around corners as well as the honda odyssey and nissan quest. It leans in hard turns, so drivers will have to be careful not to upset whatever activities are going on in back. three v6 engines are available. Next is a 3. 8-liter v6 of 197 horsepower. The 3. 8 and 4. 0-liter engines have a six-speed automatic. We found the base 3. 3-liter engine can struggle with freeway on-ramps. Chrysler has been working to give its minivans a competitive advantage in these areas for a long time, and those efforts show. the interior materials are lackluster, however. Hard plastic dominates the dash and door panels. Everything fits together well, but it doesn't make for a luxurious look and feel. We quite liked the look and feel. The black vinyl trim and satin aluminum-look plastic didn't look rich, but nor was it ugly. Among them is the convex conversation mirror, which is handy for talking to those in the rear seats without having to turn around. We like this feature. we had six 10-year-old soccer players test the grand caravan's video player during a 90-minute drive to the game, and they liked it. Equinox is big enough that its dimensions blur the line between compact and midsize sport utilities. It's nearly 14 inches longer than the ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. as a result, the equinox is roomier than other compact suvs, and has features that enhance its versatility. The back seats are mounted on tracks and slide fore and aft. Slide the seats rearward for more rear legroom. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. However, equinox only seats five because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row as the new rav4 does. it long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. Like the cr-v, rav4, and escape, equinox is based on a passenger car design. equinox was launched as a 2005 model so there aren't any major changes for 2006. However, the 2006 models do come standard with anti-lock brakes, cruise control, and other features, which wasn't the case last year. Also, interior changes have been made for 2006 to improve the appearance and function of the cabin. Both are available with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). But its side-view shape is quite a bit different from the rest of the family, and we like it. the roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. It's a sound that no other chevrolet truck makes. the equinox look solidly planted on its wheels. Its bigger size is evident everywhere. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. Improvements for '06 include new knobs for climate control (and a claim of improved performance), and better integration of the passenger-side airbag cover. Down on the console, the t-handle shifter on the '05 models has given way to a more conventional shift lever for '06. Seat heaters are now available with cloth as well as leather seats, and the seat-heating controls of been re-located to the instrument panel. the rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth by up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat. Rear passengers also enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and dual slide-out cupholders. Rear head restraints have been down-sized slightly for '06, improving rearward visibility for the driver. gm's designers have used the space above the wheel wells to a handy cargo storage system. A lightweight reversible panel slides into slots on the equinox's wheel wells at three different heights. Carpeted on one side and plastic on the other, the panel can serve as shelf, cargo cover or even a picnic or tailgating table. The tops of the wheel wells contain storage bins for small items. And there are several tie-downs and hooks on the panel from which to hang grocery bags. However, this system is being eliminated during the 2006 model year to increase cargo capacity. xm satellite radio is a great feature when traveling cross country because the stations don't change. Simply press the blue button and a human operator responds, to provide directions and other assistance. It delivers good acceleration and it's smooth enough. Epa fuel economy estimates are 19/24 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 18/23 for the awd version. The 3. 4-liter v6 is an old overhead-valve design that lacks modern features such as variable valve timing and variable-length intake runners. So it feels strained when pushed at high rpm. It delivers 185 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. the v6 engine is aided considerably by the five-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the equinox can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 5 seconds, which should be adequate performance for most families. And while it may not excel at acceleration, equinox is rated to pull a 3500-pound trailer. its long wheelbase and 3600-pound heft give the equinox a decent ride, making it a suitable companion for long trips. Its handling is responsive and it's easy to modulate the brakes for smooth stops. the equinox has good road feel in highway driving, yet the driver may notice that steering effort is very low at low speeds for easier maneuvering in tight parking lots. The steering ratio is variable, and the equinox uses electric, rather than hydraulic, power steering. An electronic control unit programmed for a variety of performance characteristics regulates an electric motor mounted adjacent to the steering column, providing the right amount of assist for a given driving situation. The new santa fe is smooth and quiet and handles well on winding, paved roads. The hood slopes up toward the raked windshield and the wedge shape continues along the lower edges of the side windows that sweep up dramatically toward the tailgate. even the rear has distinctively curved lines with high mounted taillight clusters that are partially mounted on the main body and the tailgate. The easy to see and easy to grab tailgate handle is definitely a santa fe design cue. although the new santa fe is slightly larger than the previous model, it looks smaller because its styling is more refined and it looks less like a truck. interiorpleasing is the best way to describe the interior of the hyundai santa fe as it features modern plastics with a soft touch feel. All models include blue accent lighting at night to illuminate the instruments, switches and the edges of the front cupholders. Even the base gls has nice luxury touches that include realistic looking, but fake wood-trim accents across the width of the dashboard, surrounding the shifter and along the door panels. the gauges are mounted in a large instrument pod in front of the steering wheel. The radio and climate controls are well located in a center stack that is mounted high in the dashboard for easy reach and observation while driving. according to hyundai's measurements, the headroom and legroom is greater in all rows than in competing models thanks to a uniquely designed unibody that is not based off an existing car platform, thus allowing the engineers to maximize interior space without compromise. with the optional third row of seats folded down there is a generous 34. 2 cubic feet of storage space on an almost flat floor. Fold down the middle row of seats and there is 79. 3 cubic feet of storage space. Although the santa fe is one of smallest midsize suvs in exterior dimensions it is far from being the smallest inside, a tribute to its space-efficient design. the air vents for the center row of seats are mounted in the b-pillar, which is much more effective than being mounted down low behind the center console, as in many vehicles. we did not get to try a model with the third row of seats. Additionally, one loses the very practical hidden storage space under the rear floor when the vehicle is fitted with the optional third row of seats. driving impressionnobody can really expect an suv, even one built using a stiff unibody, to handle as well as a sedan. However the new hyundai santa fe comes mighty close. The steering has a pleasant feel, neither too tight nor too loose, the brakes work well if not dramatically, the ride is smooth and the vehicle is quiet. the gls comes with the smaller of two available v6 engines and is available with a manual transmission, which is a unique combination in the u. We haven't had a chance to check it out and hyundai admits few people will buy one, but a manual transmission is available for drivers who want one. we briefly drove a santa fe with all-wheel drive and on dry pavement it did not feel any different from the front-drive model. Called stow 'n go, the optional system features second-row and third-row seats that flip down into the floor, leaving a huge, perfectly flat cargo compartment behind the front seats. And its cargo space is more accessible and more convenient than that of suvs. with the seats in place, the grand caravan can carry seven. Selectively folding away the seats allows versatility in hauling a mix of passengers and cargo. No need to pull the seats out and store them in the garage or to try to put stuff on top of them. the current model dates back to 1996, but dodge has continuously improved it since then. The 2005 model year brought substantial upgrades. It comes with hand-crank windows, manually adjusted mirrors, and a limited list of options, although rear-seat video entertainment is now available on all caravan models. But it's powered by the 3. 3-liter v6 engine, and comes with more sophisticated airbags with occupant classification system (ocs) and driver's side inflatable knee blocker. Front seatbelts use pre-tensioners to take up slack during a collision. Middle- and third-row seats include child-seat anchors for a more secure installation. Optional side curtain airbags are designed to offer head protection for outboard occupants in all three rows. walkarounddodge caravan and grand caravan are large vehicles, but not outrageously so. Measuring 200 inches long and less than 5-feet, 9-inches tall, even the grand caravan will fit just about anywhere a full-size sedan will fit. The standard caravan measures 189. 3 inches bumper to bumper. Grand caravan's extra 11 inches makes a big difference in the amount of cargo it can carry with all three rows of seats in place. Caravan rides on a wheelbase of 113. 3 inches, while the grand caravan stretches across a wheelbase of 119. 3 inches. grand caravan and caravan are sleek and attractive with steeply raked windshields and aggressive grilles. The tracks for the sliding side doors are cleverly camouflaged under the rear side windows for a clean appearance. The d-pillars and rear window are steeply inclined for a sporty look, and a discrete spoiler rises from the trailing edge of the roof. Flared wheel openings add strength to the appearance. Headlamps and tail lamps are big, the latter wrapping around to the sides. The optional roof rack is hunkered close to the roof, stylistically less obtrusive and perhaps less likely to generate wind noise, but also offering less clearance for the thicker hooks of some tie-downs. for 2005, dodge freshened the caravan's appearance with a new u-shaped grille featuring black bars behind dodge's trademark body-color crosshairs, a design cue shared with the new dodge magnum. Also new was a molded-in license plate pocket and revised fog lamps, while new body-colored side moldings protected the door. These details have continued unchanged for 2006. models with power sliding doors on both sides add convenience when moving passengers. Press the button on the remote transmitter twice and the door slides open; press it twice again and it slides closed and seals. From the second-row seat, the power sliding door can be opened and closed by pressing a button; it can also be opened manually. A safety lock switch hidden on the trailing edge of the door can be engaged to prevent a child from opening the sliding door from inside. The power sliding doors can be fussy when passengers are in a hurry to get out, however, and passengers usually are in a hurry. Pulling on the outside lever opens the power door manually, with just slightly more effort than opening a regular manual door. the standard manually operated sliding doors are easy to operate, smoothly gliding open and closed with the pull of a nicely designed lever. The outside door handles are comfortable and well designed; they impart a feeling of quality in appearance and operation. All door handles should be this good. a power rear liftgate is available that adds convenience when picking up groceries or supplies. Press a button on the remote control and the liftgate opens or closes automatically. The material is soft and appears to be durable. Faux carbon fiber trim added a touch of high-tech to the cabin. the seats in the grand caravan seemed more bucket-like than those of the similar chrysler town & country, and not as comfortable. The dodge has a manually adjustable lumbar support, however, and the seatbacks seem to have more side bolstering than in the t&c. The power seat adjusters have exposed screws on them that do not feel aesthetically pleasing. The seating position is higher than that of a sedan, which enables drivers to see over traffic. The second and third rows of seats fold flat into the floor leaving a perfectly flat platform for cargo. Folding and unfolding the seats is a quick three-step process. Pull one strap to drop the seatback, then pull two other straps to tuck it into the floor. This leaves a perfectly flat platform. Very few seats fold perfectly flat and no one else (except chrysler) has a second row that does this. The system is also flexible. The third row is split 60/40 and either or both of the second-row captain's chairs can be stowed. Getting into the third row is a little awkward, but easier than in most suvs. Once back there, the third-row seating is comfortable, though the seat bottoms are steeply raked. grand caravan se and both caravan models come standard with the traditional seating setup instead of the new stow 'n go system, so the seats must be removed to turn them into effective cargo haulers. We found the second-row bucket seats and third-row split bench easy to remove, however. Designers made more changes on the inside, rendering a more traditional look than before. but the biggest news is under the hood where the engine line-up has been revised. Among them is a super-clean, 130-horsepower engine that's more powerful and slightly more fuel efficient; it qualifies as a partial zero emissions vehicle in california, new york, massachusetts, vermont and maine. A new 136-horsepower engine is more powerful than last year's powerplant. despite the makeover, the ford focus remains inexpensive, stylish, practical and fun. The sedans are comfortable and move people efficiently. The three-door hatchback proves to be economical and practical yet sporty and fun. The five-door hatchback makes it easier for rear-seat passengers to join in the merriment. The wagons can carry a ton of cargo. we found the sporty zx4 st fun to drive, if a bit noisy. It delivered strong acceleration from its 151-horsepower engine with sharp handling and precise steering from its sports suspension. Optional on all models are anti-lock brakes and side-impact airbags 350). Its styling at the time was fresh and innovative. While ford designers describe its new look as more refined and grown-up, it continues with same general theme of sweeping arcs and crisp creases that we've grown accustomed to. It takes a sharp eye to distinguish the subtle changes from the old one to the new one, however. designers say they styled the front to have hints of the ford five hundred, the company's upcoming flagship sedan. Its hood and fenders fall away less sharply than the original to make the car look more substantial and to create a better sight line of the edge of the car for easier parking. the most noticeable change is the larger grille with the diamond pattern ringed in chrome. Other new details include reshaped headlamps with clear lenses and a new fascia that incorporates a wide lower air intake, and new round fog lamps. The sedan has new taillamps and rear bumper fascia. All focus models have a hood made of harder steel and fascias made of thicker plastics to ward off dents and dings. interiordesigners made more changes on the inside than the outside. It retains its roomy interior space for its compact size and high roofline for headroom. the previous dash consisted of a collection of arcs, a theme that reinforced the exterior design, and an instrument panel covered by an asymmetrically curved and sharply creased bezel. Those shapes are mostly gone in exchange for a more traditional look. The instrument panel was re-styled to be less cluttered. A monochrome charcoal is offered on the zx4 st, zx3 and zx5. All models but the zx4 st also come with a two-tone flint interior. The zx4 and zx2 can be ordered with a two-tone pebble interior. on two-tone models, the lower portions of the instrument panel and door trim panels are finished in a lighter shade for a more open feeling. Cloth and leather upholstery are offered. The zx4 st has unique woven fabrics or suede seating surfaces surrounded with leather trim. a standard floor console houses the shifter, two cupholders, the parking brake, and controls for options such as traction control. An overhead console includes a sunglasses holder and a space for a garage door opener. More storage is provided in the front doors, which also have a molded-in holder for cups and bottles. driving impressionsince it was introduced, the ford focus has been praised for its spirited driving dynamics, particularly for a small car. It has made a number of 'best' lists for its driving characteristics. To that end, john sidelko, focus chief engineer, said his group looked at what customers liked about the focus, enhancing those a bit, and what they complained about, fixing those. indeed, the biggest news on the focus is under its hood. More important, it puts out much lower emissions so it meets pzev (partial zero emissions vehicle) standards. It gets an epa-rated 23/32 mpg. It is paired only with a five-speed manual transmission. The shifter is a new one and is more precise in locking into gear than the one it replaces. the higher horsepower engine was the one in the tested focus zx4 st. Indeed, it delivers strong acceleration from a dead stop and easily cruised to passing speeds on the highway. The only complaint with the engine was noise. Despite efforts by ford engineers to quiet the cabin, the zx4 st was excessively loud with engine noise even cruising at highway speeds. ford borrowed pieces of the suspension from the european-sold focus and the 2004 focus svt to make the zx4 st more performance oriented than the other models. It borrows the front struts and rear shocks from those models, and they are 50 percent stiffer than the ones on the se and ses versions. The zx4 st also has its own distinctive 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels and pirelli all-season radials. The package provides sharp handling response, precise steering and generally an enjoyable connection with the road. Indeed, the focus, at least in this version, remains one of the most fun cars in the class to drive. summarydespite its makeover, the ford focus remains inexpensive, stylish, practical and fun. Technically, competitors will include its cousin, the audi tt, its stablemates, the golf gti, and, in some circles, other retro-mobiles like the pt cruiser, the thunderbird and the mini. But the newest beetle's unique looks and stand-out performance make it a species apart. the rest of the beetle line continues to turn heads, however, and 2002 brings special color editions in riviera blue and pastel green; snap orange, double yellow, and cyber green come with special seats, trim, and wheel inserts. Very cool. lineupsix models of the new beetle are available: gl; gls 2. 0l; gls tdi; gls 1. 8t; glx, and the new turbo s. gl 15,900) and gls 2. 0l 16,850) are powered by volkswagen's 115-horsepower 2. 0-liter engine. gls tdi 17,900) uses a 90-horsepower 1. 9-liter turbocharged diesel engine. the 1. 8t comes with a 150-horsepower turbocharged 1. 8-liter engine. A few even flash the peace sign. the turbo s looks similar to the other new beetles, but aerodynamic enhancements give it a hunkered-down german turbo look. Smoothed-out wheel wells and revised bumpers give it a seamless, aerodynamic appearance. Double exhaust pipes hint of compressed aspiration under the hood, while special 17-inch alloy wheels and tires indicate a sports suspension. A subtle turbo s badge, styled after porsche badging, adorns the back hatch on which sits a rear valance. Beetle turbo s is available in three basic colors: black, red and silver. The metallic silver is available at no extra charge, and a dark platinum gray will be added to the palette early in 2003. new colors for the rest of the beetle line include platinum grey, snap orange, and riviera blue. Marlin blue will replace batik blue; blue lagoon will replace techno blue; double yellow will replace yellow; and reflex silver will replace silver arrow. all beetles look creative and distinctive and spare. Quality is excellent. Gaps between doors, fenders and other body panels are some of the tightest we've seen. 2002 beetle gl and gls models get a new wheel cover design. New 16-inch six-spoke wheels are available for gls models. For 2002, 1. 8 t models get the turbo badge and new 16-inch alloy wheels. the new beetle has distinguished itself being among the safest of small cars. It has well-engineered crumple zones, dual frontal and side-impact airbags, and antilock brakes. interiorinside, the new beetle reflects elements of beetles past. Although truck space is small, the rear seats fold forward to increase cargo-carrying capacity. the beetle features an unusual seating position. A huge dash area looms ahead of the driver. Now the windshield is steeply raked and has been moved several feet forward. The hood slopes so sharply downward that the driver cannot see it. The only thing visible outside the windshield is the road ahead. the sweeping roofline creates tremendous front-seat headroom. That same roofline cramps people in back, however. Outside mirrors are mounted well forward of the driver, a better position than that of many other cars which mount them too close to the driver. Beefy front a-pillars (the post between the windshield and side window) impede vision in tight corners. for some of us, it takes some adjustment to get used to the seating position and general ergonomics. Available seat heaters are adjustable and are a great feature. a myriad of materials is used to give the beetle a high-tech look. The upper dash uses coarse, hard materials accented by smoother, softer surfaces elsewhere. Curved, dimpled door handles look ultra-modern. Upper door panels use a matte version of the car's exterior paint. The steering wheel features brushed aluminum spokes and carbon-fiber-looking handgrips. A small bud vase keeps a small flower looking fresh or holds a plastic daisy. drivers will have few choices to make on the dealer lot, because beetles come loaded with air conditioning, power windows and sunroof, eight-speaker cd stereo system, power outlets for phones and laptops, and remote locking system. One of the few options is a dealer-installed smoker's package including ashtrays and lighter. A cruise control indicator light has been added for 2002. Also, the quality of the leatherette has been improved and can be added as a no-cost option. a big speedometer and tiny tachometer are in a circular gauge panel that glows indigo at night. The gauges are attractive, but somewhat small and difficult to read. Red lighting is used for the stereo and heating/air conditioning controls to minimize glare at night. Sleek radio and heater controls are within easy reach. The stereo sounds good. the glove box looks impressive, but its massive door belies the tiny, awkwardly shaped compartment. Other storage options are available, however: nets on the doors, a sunglasses compartment. One-touch power windows are a nice luxury feature, particularly at toll booths. But the rear windows do not open, so back-seat passengers can feel a little claustrophobic on summer days. Dual 12-volt power outlets and three cup holders make living with the new beetle convenient. turbo s comes with special interior trim. The heated sport seats with leather trim and gray inserts are comfortable, though spare. Stainless steel pedals are perforated for a high-performance look and feel, and brushed-metal accents adorn the stick shift, steering wheel and glove box. the bud vase, a now-classic sight in the beetle, has been updated for high-speed flower power in the turbo version where the vase is brushed steel. The upper dash, or cowl, uses coarse, hard materials accented by smoother, softer surfaces elsewhere. Curved, dimpled door handles look ultra-modern. Upper door panels use a matte version of the car's exterior paint. driving impressionbeetles offer excellent handling. The rigid chassis provides a smooth, controlled ride with little noise, vibration or harshness. Quick and accurate steering response, combined with good grip from the tires and a compliant suspension, help keep it firmly in contact with the road. The beetle is quite stable in high-speed sweeping turns and under hard braking. The suspension is firm enough for crisp handling, yet nicely damped to smooth out bumps and road vibration. Handling among the different beetle models is quite similar as the suspension is tuned to provide the same driving characteristics. the difference lies chiefly in the engines. That's the way the original bugs were equipped and shifting gears is part of the driving fun. Torque from the base 2. 0-liter engine comes on at relatively low revs and makes the car feel quite sprightly around town. It is, in fact, one of the slowest cars on the road. volkswagen's tdi diesel engine delivers solid small-car performance and fuel economy. Unlike most diesels and certainly unlike the original beetle, the engine runs remarkably smoothly and produces a diesel sound only at idle. The diesel also has a better feel to it. It's suited very well for everyday driving. Volkswagen builds some of the best small diesel engines in the world and this one is smooth, quiet and clean. the 1. 8t versions add brisk acceleration performance to the equation. It lacks some response at the bottom of the rpm range, but once the revs are up it provides good acceleration performance. Step on the gas and the car begins to build momentum, then there's a whoosh of power. The beetle 1. 8t can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 7. 5 seconds, a quite respectable performance. the new turbo s model quickens the pace even further, into sports car territory.
