Payload capacities of up to 5800 pounds are available in the 2005 super duty trucks, with tow ratings of up to 17,000 pounds. The ford f-250 super duty competes with the dodge ram 2500, chevrolet silverado 2500, and gmc sierra 2500. The f-350, with its available dual rear wheels, competes against the 3500-series models from gm and dodge. None of these, however, match the super duty's top payload and towing capacities. the 2005 super duty pickups continue to feature first-class powertrains. Both of the v8 gas engines are upgraded for 2005. A locking tailgate is standard. king ranch crew cabs are dressed up with body-color mirror housings and door handles and distinctive two-tone paint selections, lighted running boards and special king ranch aluminum wheels. The harley-davidson specials sport a unique, tautly meshed grille; color choices consist of black, black and orange, and black and gray; factory-applied flame graphics are a new option 675). the tow hitch receiver has been increased from 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches for increased towing capacity. interiorford super duty trucks are very roomy, with comfortable, spacious seats and plenty of hip and shoulder room. truck owners spend a lot of time in their vehicles, so ford's interior designers paid a lot of attention to comfort and convenience. The standard interior features a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging storage bin that can attach to the dash. Even the standard bench seats recline. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet conveniently mounted up in the dash to the right of the climate control switches. controls are big and easy to reach and manipulate. The instrument array is new, with large, round speedometer and tachometer, bracketed by oil pressure and fuel level gauges to the left and transmission temperature (on trucks with automatics) and coolant temperature gauges to the right. The f-250 manages to mix innovation, comfort, and style into a competitive vehicle that has impressive torque ratings, towing capacities, and payloads. The f-250 is available as a 4x2 or a 4x4, has three different cab configurations, and has three trims available. The rugged and reliable xl, the well equipped xlt, and the luxurious lariat. Two engine choices include a standard 6. 2-liter 385-hp triton v8 with 405 lb.-ft. Of torque or the optional and innovative 6. 7-liter turbo 400-hp v8 powerstroke diesel with 800 lb.-ft. Both engines are mated to a new torqshift six-speed automatic transmission with selectshift and a tow/haul mode. Available features include a supplemental cab heater, a reverse camera system, upfitter switches, a navigation system, a remote start system, satellite radio and a rear folding tailgate step. New engines, more models. introductionsmooth and quiet, the ford f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain at construction sites, around farms and over utility roads, and on the open highway. Its steering is nicely weighted and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. For 2011, the f-150 received a new engine lineup and electric-assist steering on all but 6. 2-powered crew cabs. For 2012, the lariat limited model is no longer offered, but one of the nine f-150 versions should be close enough. a new fx appearance package is for 2012 f-150 fx2 and fx4 models that includes 20-inch wheels and lots of flat-black trim inside and out. All 2012 f-150 4wd models can now be flat-towed behind another vehicle, like a motorhome or larger construction truck. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required, and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,550-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. (the ford super duty line of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) two v8 and two v6 engines are offered, all with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Standard on 2wd is a 302-hp 3. 7-liter v6. Other choices include a 360-hp 5-liter v8, the only engine offered on every cab/bed combination, a 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8 on supercrew short beds, and a 365-hp twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 on all but regular cab short beds. So it has to stay competitive: the standard v6 is more powerful than any other pickup v6 and the same horsepower as chevy's 1. 1-liter-larger v8; the 6. 2 offered in crew cabs and raptor is more powerful than any half-ton pickup engine; it's the only pickup that comes with a 6-speed automatic in every model. Supercab trucks add higher fx and lariat trim to choices plus svt's raptor, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet). A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty package. The supercrew f-150, available with either the short bed or standard bed, drops the stx grade and adds king ranch and platinum derivatives while harley-davidson is supercrew short bed only. the f-150 xl 22,990) is a standard bed, regular cab two-wheel drive. It comes only with the 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8. Unique long-travel high-performance suspension, wheels and tires, and aggressive bodywork set it apart from any other f-150. A front camera is offered for seeing close-in obstacles or drops obscured by the hood. the f-150 option list is comprehensive and, although simplified in recent years, can still resemble the tax code to the uninitiated; there are, for example, many option codes for running boards and trailer towing mirrors. Most options are dependent on the model and other options, and many features are standard on more expensive models or go that way with engine upgrades. Its handling is precise and responsive given its size and weight. These are benefits of its rigid chassis and sophisticated independent rear suspension. By comparison, the old (pre-2003) expedition had a rough ride and a sloppy truck-based suspension. the interior was redesigned for 2003 as well. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child. safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals to give smaller drivers a better seating, and a tire-pressure monitor. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip. storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air. the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations. The available power-operated third-row seats fold flat with the press of a button. The third-row seat is split 60-40 into two seats. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The power-down buttons are convenient. The third row disappears into the floor, leaving a perfectly flat cargo area. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store. The third-row headrests can be pushed down flush with the seatbacks, greatly improving rearward visibility when no one is seated back there. the second-row bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section can be moved forward 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents easier access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface for the two people in back. Available on all models, it cranks out 160 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 225 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. It compares well against toyota tacoma's high-revving 3. 4-liter v6 (190 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 220 foot-pounds of torque at 3600 rpm). It zipped down the highway, always smoothly shifting into just the right ratio for the given situation. With the 3. 0 engine, a 4x4 gets 16/20 mpg, with the 4. 0-liter a 4x4 gets 15/19. When the system is disengaged, the front drive train is disconnected at the wheels. The truck gets better fuel economy with less vibration and noise. interiorthe ranger is a people-friendly truck. It has more than adequate headroom and legroom for plus-sized passengers and drivers. It's best used for groceries, toys, or kids. In fact, just getting into that space is difficult in two-door models. instruments are well placed and quite readable, and the controls are in the expected places. Visibility is good all the way around. Instead, ford supplies a round ash cup that fits in a floor-mounted cupholder. At times, it was hard to believe that we were driving a 4wd truck with torsion-bar suspension and 16-inch all-terrain tires. The ride is that smooth. there was a fair amount of wind noise in the cab-more than one would expect from such a well-built truck. Fortunately, the superb am/fm/cd sound system that comes standard in xlt models did a good job of canceling out the noise. on-road handling is precise and responsive. The ranger tracks well and holds firmly onto the blacktop, even in sharp curves. In an emergency stop, the abs holds the truck straight and true. where this truck showed its real character, though, was on a trek into the coyote mountains, which lay at the eastern base of the sierra nevadas. While the sierra's mount tom dwarfs everything in sight with its 13,652-foot elevation, the 11,200-foot coyote ridge we reached in the ranger is no walk in the park. The track leading into the coyotes is narrow, twisting, rocky, and occasionally has holes big enough to swallow a lesser truck. We purposely held off putting the truck in 4wd as long as we could. With its big tires and limited-slip rear axle, the ranger did quite well. It wasn't until we came on one particularly steep, rough section that we felt it prudent to flip the 4wd selector switch to 4wd-high. The ranger climbed the hill like a mountain goat. We left it in 4wd the rest of the trek. The only time we shifted to 4wd-low was to gear down on a steep descent. That makes it appeal to different types of people and meet their individual needs. the sedans are comfortable and move people efficiently. The three-door hatchback is economical and practical, yet sporty and fun at the same time. The five-door hatchback makes it easier for rear-seat passengers to join in the merriment. The wagons can carry a ton of cargo and are good for dogs. for 2007, the focus enjoys optional new leather-trimmed sport seats, two new exterior colors and upgrades to the sound systems. The focus is expected to get styling revisions and other upgrades for 2008, so expect deals on the 2007 models. the zx4 st is particularly sporting with strong acceleration from its 151-hp engine and sharp handling and precise steering from its sports suspension. The s trim level comes with manual driver's seat-height adjustment, split-folding rear seat, am/fm/cd/mp3, and 15-inch wheels.
